This activity really lit the students up; many people who had seemed reluctant to participate in group discussions came "to life" for the first time in this more active group situtation, giving me something to point to, saying "I want to hear this much input from you every period."
I offered 1-extra credit point applied towards their test grades to the closest prediction. I plan to use similar activities periodically to enliven the class. Some people just respond very well to competition.
