Case Purposes

  1. To help students distinguish between the terms science and technology.
  2. To demonstrate how consensible knowledge can be used in both public and private decision making.
  3. To explore the social, ethical, and political contexts of the practice of science.

Relation to Texts

Description of Case Materials The case consists of the web material link above, two sets of readings, and a writing assignment.

Case Use The case extends over several class periods. The first redaings and discussion center on the differences between science and technology. The second readings and discussion raise a range of issues concerning the social, politcal and ethical contexts of cloning technology. In the writing assignment, students are asked to write a dialog which contrasts two views of the potential use of this technology.
