Author - Clyde Herreid - 1997 ; Mary Kot- Fall 1997

This case is based on: Herreid, Clyde (1997). Human Cloning: Dialogues as Case Studies.
Mary Kot added teaching notes in Fall 1997.

Case Use As described, this case extends over at least 3 class periods.

Day 1 Reading Assignment This contains readings from Ziman and two magazine articles. The assignment is described in detail in a Student Handout or Web Posting

Day 1 Discussion What is the idfference between science and techn ology?
The purpose of this discussion is to compare science and technology. I would divide the class into 4 small groups and ask an opening question. Your opening question might be, "Is cloning science or is it technology? Why?" During the discusssion students should address the concept of science, technology, and cloning. During the last 20 minutes of a TR class I would bring the groups together for a class discussion.

Day 2 Reading Assignment is a list of articles that discuss social, ethical, political context of this technology. The assignment is described in detail in a Student Handout or Web Posting

Day 2 Discussion How should cloning technology be used by society?
This discussion should focus on how public policy concerning cloning is, or will be, determined and on the ethical considerations and implications of cloning. I would ask each group to consider thsese issue individually and then in a class discussion the last 20 minutes. You could assign half of the groups to be "pro" and the other half to be "con".

Day 3 Writing Assignment Write a Dialogue Paper on Human Cloning-See Herreid paper.
The assignment is described in detail in a Student Handout or Web Posting I originally intended these discussions to be carried out on consecutive days. However, you could hold the second discussion until Ziman Chapter 6: The World of Science.
