Science frequently contains both
primary and secondary literature related to the Human Genome
Project.
- Koonin (1998, An Independent
Perspective on the Human Genome Project. Science
279:36)
discusses the Human Genome project as "big
science" relative to other big science endeavors
such as space and planetary science. This article could
potentially be a tool for a class discussion on the
management of big science.
- Pennisi (1998, Sifting Through and
Making Sense of Genome Sequences, Science 280:1692)
reports from the latest Genome meeting on what scientists
are doing to make sense of all of the DNA sequence data
they are collecting.
- Venter et al. (1998, Shotgun
Sequencing of the Human Genome. Science 280:1540)
work for private companies--The Institute for Genomic
Research and Perkin--Elmer. These authors have devised a
method for sequencing the entire human genome in 3 years
and have begun to do so. If successful, they will finish
well before the academic laboratories funded and
coordinated by the Human Genome Project (launched in 1990
and proposed completion in 2005). Are the duplicated
efforts necessary? This article would be a good tool for
generating a discussion about spending tax dollars for
science.

Hazens The Sciences--An Integrated Approach outlines
the basic genetic information necessary for faculty to teach the
material. Articles from both sides of three ethical debates
related to the Human Genome Project enclosed as well. A copy of
the above Science articles are also available.
