My class spent two class periods on Mendel's paper using the "Great Books" approach described in Tom's case notes. We covered the experimental design (Tom's Day 1) and then just the first sets of results (part of Tom's Day 2). After my wrap up, the class worked on a written assignment to essentially critique the paper.

I used this example of a classic scientific communication as a good follow-up to sections in Ziman (ISS) and S&B (Faces) about communication within the scientific community. Students responded well and made thoughtful written critiques.
