Case Purpose The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate how one would study a psychological question scientifically.

Description of Case Materials There are two exercises:

• Concrete vs Abstract Memory Exercise consists a list of concrete words and a list of words for abstract ideas.
• The Social Loafing Exercise consists of sets of instructions for creating word lists.

Case Use

• Concrete vs Abstract Memory Exercise: Students are randomly assigned to groups and asked to memorize word lists. Results are scored to see if a concrete terms are more easily memorized that abstract terms.
