Case Purpose The purpose of this case is:

  1. to teach students about the dynamic nature of theories, how they change, replace others and evolve;
  2. to help students understand the difference and uses between experimental and theoretical research;
  3. to help students explore the predictive powers of a theory;
  4. to help students understand the use of maps and metaphors in science;
  5. to help students understand the consensual nature of science;
  6. to help students understand the utility of indirect measurements in science;
  7. to help students understand the importance of sample size in data collection.

Relation to Texts

Description of Case Materials This case is designed to last for 6 or 7 class periods. It includes several days of whole class discussion and small group activities. Case materials include readings and class activities. The 'backscattering' boards are available from Mary Kot.
