On Being A Scientist: Responsible Conduct In Research - 7/28/98 - David Steyert Comment: An outstanding resource for the ethics of scientific practice is the National Academy of Sciences publication: On Being a Scientist: Responsible Conduct in Research. There is a good bibliography, as well. Dated 1995, it is available online at the address given. My opinion is that it should be required reading for incoming Graduate Students, (Or students leaving Mercer for graduate school) But there may be ways to tie it in to the Scientific Inquiry Course. Among the more interesting aspects of this book is the case studies (more like scenarios) they present. Below is a list: Selection of Data, Conflict of interest, Industrial Sponsorship, Sharing of Research Materials, Credit Where Credit is Due [Communication outside of publication] Publication Practices, Fabrication in a Grant Application, Plagiarism, A Career in the Balance [Fabricated data]
ScienceDaily Magazine -- Your link to the latest research news Tracks and collects reports of scientific research. Gives links to original sources. Pretty handy for short discussions of new discoveries, etc. [Tim Brazill]
