The table above shows the range of average pulse rates for different ages. The biggest change seems to be in the early years; there is little change once we reach adulthood. From these data, I conclude that larger people have a lower metabolic rate.
Which one of the following is an assumption I must make to reach my conclusion? (Whether or not my conclusion is a reasonable one.) For statements that are not logically necessary assumptions, state clearly what they are (observation, conclusion, irrelevant assumption or assertion, necessary assumption) and justify your choice with a short, logical argument. 10 points: 2 points for finding the necessary assumption, 8 points for your (justified) descriptions of the other statements.
a. The older a person gets, the lower their pulse rate is.
b. The pulse rate is a good measure of the metabolic rate.
c. Larger people have a lower metabolic rate.
d. Each heartbeat is pumping the same amount of blood.
e. As a person gets older, his/her metabolic rate decreases.
